Pharrell Williams recently spoke about celebrity political endorsements and seemingly took a jab at Taylor Swift for backing Vice President Kamala Harris.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Williams expressed his frustration with celebrities who publicly endorse political candidates.
He stated,”I don’t do politics. In fact, I get annoyed sometimes when I see celebrities trying to tell you [who to vote for].”
“There are celebrities that I respect that have an opinion, but not all of them.”
He also added, “I’m one of them people [who says], ‘What the heck? Shut up. Nobody asked you.'”
“When people get out there and get self-righteous and they roll up their sleeves and s**t, and they are out there walking around with a placard — shut up!”
These comments came just one day after Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election.
While Pharrell did not mention Swift by name, many interpreted his remarks as a thinly veiled criticism of her endorsement.
Taylor Swift’s fans, known as “Swifties,” were quick to respond to Pharrell’s comments.
One Swifty wrote on X, “Pharrell is blatantly referring to Taylor – look at the timing. No other celeb’s endorsement has had her impact.”
Another one chimed in, “I’m disappointed in Pharel (sic) as he calls out Taylor for no reason. Why shouldn’t she say who she’s endorsing like the rest of us can. She’s a human being.”
A third user slammed the singer, “Pharrell is a lowkey Trump supporter. Why can’t celebs say who they vote for?”
“In this election it’s important. He can shut up if he wants. Weirdo.”
Despite his criticism of celebrity endorsements, Pharrell also opened up on his own political views.
He stated that he plans to vote but didn’t reveal his chosen candidate.
Pharrell said, “Not sure I’ll ever vote far right.”
“I care about my people and I care about the country, but I feel there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, and I’m really about the action.”
This controversy comes amid a surge of celebrity political endorsements for the 2024 election.
Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas O’Connell, recently announced their support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. elections.
