Beetlejuice star Geena Davis shares theory on why she and Alec Baldwin weren't asked to appear in sequel

Star of the original Beetlejuice Geena Davis has shared a theory on why she and Alec Baldwin weren’t asked to return for the sequel.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has released to massive fan and critical acclaim, with the film receiving a score of 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and already having outgrossed the original film’s entire run.

One question on a lot of fan’s lips, however, is where the Maitlands from the original - played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis - are in the sequel.

The Maitlands are arguably the main characters for the first 1988 film and are undeniably the vehicle through which the audience is introduced to the world of the dead.

Their death, and subsequent ghosting, is also a major aspect of the original.

Despite this, and the return of stars like Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton, they were not asked to return.

This is explained in the film by Ryder's charatcer saying the Maitlands found ‘a loophole’ that allowed them to move on, but actor Geena Davis has her own theory.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight earlier this year she said: “I’m not in the remake. Oh, you were expecting that I would be?

" Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age … Not that I have!"

Tim Burton has also commented on why he left the pair out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and according to him it isn’t because of Alec Baldwin’s involvement in the death of Halyna Hutchins, or anything to do with ghosts not aging.

He told PEOPLE Magazine: “I think the thing was for me I didn't want to just tick any boxes.

"So even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else."

One viral tweet commented on this, saying: “Would’ve been nice to see Baldwin and Davis in Beetlejuice 2 but Davis at least has said it wouldn’t make sense because they’re supposed to remain the same age and frankly, thankful we didn’t get de-aged versions of them.”
Neither Davis or Baldwin made an appearance in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Warner Brothers)

They followed up by replying: “Think the movie actually does a great job blending the digital effects with the practicals but seeing a yassified Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis would’ve been wildly distracting.

“I actually think the quiet acknowledgment that Adam and Barbara have moved on carries genuine reverence as opposed to the absolute horror show they do with Charles, which is good.”

Charles Deetz, Lydia’s father, is shown in the sequel as being killed off, with part of his body eaten by a shark.

Couple's gender reveal goes horrifically wrong on doorbell cam video
The unfortunate gender reveal blunder was caught on camera

Smart doorbells come with a number of handy uses — from being able to answer the door from any room in your home to dealing with parcel deliveries when you’re not in.

But there's one particular model that's captured unexpected moments time and time again - and it recently captured a rather unexpected family moment.

The doorbell, from Ring, is one of the most popular models on the market and has currently got a whopping £30 off.

Let’s just say, the gender reveal in question didn’t exactly go to plan and it was all recorded on their doorbell for our viewing pleasure.

When Simon and Bronagh Laverty from Craigavon, Northern Ireland were getting ready to host their friends and family at their home to share whether they were expecting a baby girl or a baby boy, they enlisted the help of a balloon packed full of either pink or blue confetti to do so.

But, as the clip captured by their doorbell showcased, their balloon burst suddenly just as the father-to-be was walking out the front door of their home. And the telltale blue confetti that escaped from it spoiled the surprise for them prematurely.
Ring

Not only did Simon now know that he and his wife were expecting a baby boy but Bronagh also found out the gender in real time after receiving a motion detector alert from Ring on her phone.

Simon explained that his wife immediately called out to him, “What just happened?! Have we literally just found out what we’re having?”

He recalled that even though he was going through a number of different emotions after seeing the balloon pop, he was both happy and relieved to find out that his wife had seen the reveal as well.

Simon shared: “We look back at the video all the time, it gives us a laugh about what happened and how we found out. Catching it on camera was even more special than doing it in front of friends and family as we can keep and cherish it.”
Ring

He did, however, rush out to get a new balloon so as not to spoil the surprise for their closest friends and family.

“To be honest we had to play along with the whole thing and make sure no one else knew that we found out before the new balloon had popped, as we didn’t want to ruin the surprise for everyone else,” he affirmed.

The couple’s loved ones also found it incredibly funny after they eventually saw the clip.

As Simon and Bronagh were subscribed to one of Ring’s subscription plans, this meant that they could download, save and rewatch the footage for up to 180 days after the unexpected incident.

And the happy parents can’t wait to show their son Theo – who will be three in November – the video one day.

“It will be good for the wee man when he’s older to show him and say ‘This is how we found out what you were going to be'!” Simon told Ring.

Alec Baldwin charged two years after death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins
The actor will go to trial over the death of Halyna Hutchins

Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter over the death of Halyna Hutchins, who died after the actor's prop gun on the set of the film Rust fired a bullet.

A New Mexico grand jury decided to indict Baldwin on one count of involuntary manslaughter.

The actor's legal representatives Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro said 'we look forward to our day in court', though no date for the trial has yet been set.

If found guilty Alec Baldwin could spend up to 18 months in prison.

He had previously been formally charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023, though those charges were dropped in April of the same year.

"We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident," Nikas and Spiro said of the decision at the time.

On 21 October, 2021 on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set Baldwin was filming the movie Rust when his prop gun fired a live round of ammunition on set.

The shot killed 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured the film's director Joel Souza.

Court records released at the time showed that Baldwin claimed the film's assistant director Dave Halls said 'cold gun' of the prop weapon just before the shooting occurred, and that he has said he didn't pull the trigger.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film's armourer who is responsible for weapons used on the set, denied knowing where the live rounds had come from.

A report into the shooting on the set of Rust concluded in 2022 that 'firearm safety procedures were not followed on set'.

In October 2023 it was reported that prosecutors were looking to re-charge Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter.

They said: "We believe that based on our lengthy and detailed investigation that it is appropriate for a grand jury in New Mexico to make a decision on whether the case should proceed."

Special prosecutors claimed that their analysis of the weapon Baldwin was using concluded that the gun could not have been fired without the trigger being pulled.

In November footage of Baldwin on the set of Rust days before the fatal shooting emerged.

In the video Baldwin could be seen preparing for scenes, while in one moment checking on the crew and recommending they move to a safer location.

Prosecutors seeking to recharge Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter over Halyna Hutchins shooting
Alec Baldwin previously had all criminal charges dropped over the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.

Prosecutors are reportedly seeking to recharge Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter after a fatal shooting on a movie set in 2021.

In April, Baldwin had all criminal charges dropped over the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.

Hutchins, a cinematographer, was fatally shot in October 2021 when a gun Baldwin had been holding on set was fired.

Prosecutors in Santa Fe charged the actor with two involuntary manslaughter charges, with Santa Fe's District Attorney's Office accusing him of 'many instances of extremely reckless acts'.

However, the charges were dropped just three months after they were filed, as prosecutors said they had information that the gun could have been modified before Baldwin handled it and malfunctioned.

ABC

Now, sources familiar with the matter have told NBC News that the case could be brought before a grand jury in mid-November.

Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro of Quinn Emanuel told LADbible: “It is unfortunate that a terrible tragedy has been turned into this misguided prosecution. We will answer any charges in court.”

Sources claim that prosecutors no longer believe the gun had been modified and new evidence could link Baldwin to recklessness around safety standards.

“We believe that based on our lengthy and detailed investigation that it is appropriate for a grand jury in New Mexico to make a decision on whether the case should proceed,” special prosector Kari Morrissey told NBC News in a statement.

This comes after a forensic report in August, obtained by People, suggesting that the trigger of the prop Colt .45 revolver must have been pulled 'sufficiently', according to claims from a firearms expert.

"Although Alec Baldwin repeatedly denies pulling the trigger, given the tests, findings and observations reported here, the trigger had to be pulled or depressed sufficiently to release the fully cocked or retracted hammer of the evidence revolver,” reads the firearms report by experts Lucien Haag and Mike Haag.

They were hired by the State of New Mexico in its case against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armourer and weapons supervisor on the set of Rust.

With regards to reassembling the gun itself, it 'was found to function properly and in accordance with the operational design of original Colt 1873 single-action revolvers'.

Lawyers for Gutierrez Reed have said the report 'does not indicate any modification to the gun' and 'specifies that the trigger had to be pulled'.Featured Image Credit: John Lamparski/Getty Images/Jim Spellman/Getty Images

Expert shares theory behind why Baby Reindeer's Martha types 'sent from my iphone' on every email
Even the interview with the 'real Martha' made reference to it

Later on today (9 May), Piers Morgan will interview a woman who is being billed as the 'real Martha' from Netflix show Baby Reindeer.

A teaser for Morgan's interview with Fiona Harvey was released ahead of the interview, though the focus was largely on the barrage of questions being asked than the answers which may be provided.

The interview will be on the YouTube channel Piers Morgan Uncensored starting from 8pm, with Morgan promoting the interview on social media by saying that she wants to 'set the record straight' and 'have her say'.

The end of the teaser signed off with the words 'sent from my ihpone', a reference to the messages sent by Martha in Baby Reindeer, which contain the tag, sometimes spelled incorrectly.

In the Netflix show, based on the experiences of comedian Richard Gadd who plays 'Donny', Martha sent 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters.

All of Martha's messages in Baby Reindeer are signed 'sent from my iPhone' even though she doesn't have one, why? (Netflix)

After becoming alarmed at her relentless messaging, Donny is shocked to learn that Martha has a law degree and even worked as a lawyer before losing her job when she was convicted of stalking her boss.

According to the show, every email shown in the drama was actually sent by Martha in real life and viewers picked up on the eerie detail of all of her messages carrying the 'sent from my iPhone' signature, even though it's made clear to Netflix viewers that Martha is not emailing from an iPhone, nor does she even have one.

But why would she write that?

An expert has weighed in on the potential reasons, noting that Martha was once part of a professional industry.

Chartered psychologist Dannielle Haig told LADbible: "Her 40,000 emails, marked by this false signature, are testament not only to her obsession with Donny, but possibly to her inability to reconcile with her new reality.
Fiona Harvey disputes the events of Baby Reindeer, and told the Daily Record she was considering taking legal action over Martha. (Netflix/Ed Miller)

"The sign-off is less about the actual device and more about what it represents: a sense of belonging to a professional class and a world where she was respected and successful. It is an attempt to project an image of stability and normalcy in contrast to her current life.

"Signing off her emails with 'Sent from my iPhone' despite not owning one may serve as a symbolic link to her former status."

Dannielle noted that the small detail could be rooted in a desire to preserve her 'previous identity'.

"This small but deliberate act of deception may reflect her deep-seated need to preserve her previous identity, which has been shattered by her imprisonment," she adds.

"This insistence on a fictional narrative showcases the psychological complexities of coping with downfall. It also demonstrates how individuals might go to great lengths to retain some semblance of their former selves in the face of drastic life changes.

"Martha’s story is a raw illustration of the human desire for esteem and the lengths to which someone might go to maintain an illusion of who they once were."

The interview will feature on Piers Morgan Uncensored at 8pm.
